I was trying to tap my transit card at the subway turnstile on my way to work, but the scanner kept asking me to update the firmware on my right hand. It looked totally normal, just my regular hand, but every time I touched the gate, this blue diagnostic receipt printed out of a slot near the barrier saying my account had expired in 2048. People were crowding behind me in the humid, drizzly air, sighing and tapping their feet. The ads on the station walls were flickering with these harsh neon promotions for synthetic liver insurance, but I was just stressed about being late for my 9:00 AM status meeting. My coworker Dave showed up in line and tried to help by plugging a frayed USB cable into my wrist, but the cord was way too short, so I had to bend over awkwardly while everyone squeezed past us muttering.
