I woke up feeling like I’d just missed the train, and then I remembered the dream. I was at the grocery store, pushing a cart down the same aisle I always walk past on my way home. I turned the corner and there was my boyfriend, but he was laughing and holding hands with my old college roommate, Maya. They were both looking at a shelf of pasta sauces, and Maya kept saying, "You have to try this one, it’s amazing!" I tried to call his name, but my voice came out as a squeak. He glanced at me, his expression flickering between surprise and guilt, then he slipped a chocolate bar into his pocket and walked away with Maya. I chased them, but the store turned into a hallway that kept stretching, and every door I tried opened to the same frozen freezer section. I finally stopped, breathing hard, and realized I’d left my phone on the checkout counter, the one I always forget. The alarm on my phone buzzed in the dream, and I woke up in the kitchen, still holding my coffee mug.
