I was late for the 7:40 bus and couldn’t find my keys in the usual bowl by the door. The hallway of our building stretched farther than it should, same beige carpet, same neighbor’s stroller, but every few doors looked like my old apartment from college. I kept opening 4B and it was my current kitchen, then 4B again and it was my mom’s place, same fridge magnets. My coworker Dana was standing there like she lived with us, except she also felt like my high school lab partner, same laugh, different name. She asked why I hadn’t submitted the report yet. I said I already had, last Tuesday. She showed me a calendar where Tuesday never happened. Mild panic, then I was on the bus anyway, phone buzzing with emails from an office I don’t work at anymore. Woke up still checking my pockets for keys.
