I was at my grandmother's old house, but the kitchen had the layout of my first college apartment. My high school friend Sarah was sitting at the table dealing out ordinary playing cards, but every time she flipped one over, the symbols were faintly glowing with handwritten geometric sigils instead of suits. She acted like it was completely normal and told me we couldn't leave for our train until we decoded the sequence on the linoleum floor. I felt this intense, quiet dread because the clock on the microwave was counting down from some arbitrary number, and my keys were trapped under one of the heavier cards that I wasn't allowed to touch yet. I kept trying to read the faint gold lines, but the patterns subtly shifted every time I blinked, like the room itself was quietly breathing and waiting for me to understand the rules.
