I Kissed Maya in the Cereal Aisle at the Grocery Store

I was at the grocery store near work, holding a basket with milk and cereal, and I ran into my coworker Maya in the cereal aisle. We were talking like it was nothing, then she leaned in and we kissed, and I remember thinking my partner was waiting in the car. The aisle got longer the more I tried to walk back to the registers. My phone kept buzzing in my pocket but I couldn’t get it out. When I finally reached the front, the cashier was my partner, scanning items without looking at me. I felt this sick mix of wanting Maya and dreading being seen. I said I was just buying breakfast. Maya was suddenly standing behind me with her own basket, like we hadn’t just been together. I woke up with that leftover guilty tightness in my chest.
