I was in the pharmacy by my office grabbing allergy pills before work and I saw Jamie from college in the checkout line. Except it was also my neighbor from downstairs, same face, same voice. We ended up walking together toward the train, only the sidewalk was the hallway of my old apartment building, longer than it should be. Jamie kept saying they never actually moved away, they just stopped answering. I wanted to hold their hand the way we used to on the bus, but when I reached it felt cold and I couldn’t tell if they were really there. I felt that old crush mixed with this embarrassed, homesick thing, like I was late for a date I didn’t remember scheduling. Then my phone buzzed with a calendar alert from a job I don’t have anymore and I woke up still trying to find the right platform.
