Still no keys at the cold garage stairwell door

I was still at the office after everyone left, and the lights in the hall kept shutting off behind me. I needed my keys to get the car out of the garage before it locked, but my bag was in a conference room that had turned into the back of the supermarket near my place. Every time I found a door it opened onto another stretch of the same hallway, longer than it should have been. A guy from facilities who also looked like my old neighbor said the elevators were done for the night and I’d have to walk. My legs felt slow, like I was pushing through deep snow, and I kept checking my phone even though it was dead. I finally got to the garage stairwell and the air was cold. The car was there, but I still didn’t have the keys, just a plastic bag of something I’d bought. I stood by the door, heart going, glad I’d at least found the way down.
