I was trying to do my normal weekly grocery run at the supermarket near my old high school, but everything was coated in a fine layer of grey ash. The automatic doors were jammed open and the power was out, but people were still politely queuing with shopping carts like nothing was wrong. I bumped into Mark from my old chemistry class, and he warned me that the canned goods aisle was gone because the highway collapse crushed that side of the building. I had an overwhelming panic because I realized my debit card wouldn't work with the grid down, and I only had three paper coffee punch-cards in my wallet to barter with. I kept frantically trying to call my mom on my phone to ask what we actually needed, but the screen just showed static, and the sky outside was turning this heavy, bruised chemical orange.
