Trapped on the Back Porch in a Flash Flood

I was trying to get home from my old high school, but a flash flood had completely washed out the parking lot and the bus loop. My coworker Mark was there with me, and we realized the water was rising fast, so we had to wade through this murky, knee-deep current toward the neighborhood behind the sports fields. The path kept turning into steep muddy banks that kept crumbling when I tried to pull myself up. I dropped my work bag into the water and panicked because my phone and house keys were inside, but when I fished it out, it was totally empty. We ended up taking shelter on the back porch of someone's house I used to deliver pizzas to years ago. We just crouched there against the screen door in the freezing rain, watching the water swallow the lower steps and trying to figure out how to signal someone, terrified the porch would collapse before daylight.
