Brass Rings in the Wood-Paneled Library

Brass Rings in the Wood-Paneled Library

I was back in the house I rented right after college, helping my old coworker Maya look for her car keys. We walked down the hallway toward the back laundry room, but the corridor just kept stretching out further into dim, quiet rooms we definitely never had. It opened into a round, wood-paneled library that felt ancient and smelled strongly of dried lavender and wax. On the center table sat three heavy, unlabelled brass rings instead of the keys. Maya told me very calmly that we couldn't leave until I lined up the shadows they cast with the grain of the floorboards. I was frantically rotating them under the ceiling light, terrified we were going to miss our morning shift, but every time I thought the angles matched, the shadows drifted slightly on their own like compass needles. It felt so intensely important and heavy, but entirely ordinary at the same time.
