The Heavy Wooden Door Behind the Dryer

The Heavy Wooden Door Behind the Dryer

I was back visiting my parents' house, but when I walked into the basement to grab my old winter coat, there was a heavy wooden door behind the dryer that definitely doesn't exist in real life. I pushed it open and found this whole network of finished rooms underneath our neighborhood. My high school friend Mark was down there with me, holding a dim flashlight, and we started walking through them. It felt half like an abandoned school basement and half like the stockroom of the grocery store I worked at in college. We kept finding strange little alcoves filled with stacked cardboard boxes and vintage furniture covered in dust sheets. Every time I thought we hit a dead end, there was another narrow turn or a short flight of stairs going deeper. It wasn't scary, just intensely curious and exciting, like uncovering a secret wing of my childhood. We ended up at a locked fire exit with daylight peeking through the edges right before my alarm went off.
