Dana Asked About the Envelope in the Corner Shop

I was walking home from work after staying late, same route as always, but the streetlights hummed too loud and the blocks felt longer. Someone was behind me. When I turned it was Dana from accounting, except she also felt like my old neighbor from college. She asked if I still had the envelope. I didn’t know what envelope. We went into the corner shop, which was also somehow the lobby of my building. The clerk wouldn’t look up. I dug through my bag for keys and found a folded note instead, blank. Mild dread, like I’d left something important on my desk. Then I was late for a meeting happening in the shop and I couldn’t find the right aisle. I kept almost catching a name on the PA but it never quite came through.
