I dreamed I was late for my shift at the grocery store, but the parking lot was empty except for a few dusty cars. Inside it still looked like our store, same fluorescent lights, except half the shelves were just bottles of water and canned beans. I kept looking for my phone to clock in and couldn’t find it in my bag. My old neighbor from the apartment building was at the register, wearing a name tag from my actual job, and she asked why I wasn’t wearing the respirator. I felt embarrassed because I only had my work polo. The automatic doors kept cycling like they were stuck, and outside the sky was this gray-orange I associate with wildfire season. I tried to run to the bus stop for the 7:15, but my legs were heavy and the street was our street mixed with the highway near work. I woke up still thinking I’d missed punch-in.
