I dreamed I was at the grocery store after work, holding a bag of frozen peas, when I realized my wallet was gone. I retraced the aisles like I do when I lose my keys, except the checkout area kept looping into the hallway of my old apartment building. A neighbor I barely know—Mrs. Chen, but also somehow my coworker Dan—was standing by the dairy case saying someone had taken a package from her car in the lot. I felt that anxious need to help, like I was supposed to have seen it. I kept checking my pockets, finding receipts that weren’t mine, a parking ticket with no date. Outside it was already dark. I tried to call the non-emergency number on my phone but the keypad wouldn’t work, just that spinning loading circle. I woke up still thinking I’d left the peas on the counter.
