I was at the office after hours, looking for my notebook because I was sure I’d written down something important before a meeting. The hallway kept going past the copy room like it had extra doors. One of them opened into my old apartment kitchen, lights on, dishes in the sink. My coworker Mara was standing there, but she also felt like my sister, same voice, wrong face. She asked if I’d seen the envelope. I didn’t know what envelope. I kept checking my bag and it was empty except for a dead phone. We walked toward the elevator and the floor numbers skipped. I had this tight feeling that if I didn’t find it, someone at work would think I’d done something I hadn’t. When I finally opened a drawer, there was only a grocery list in handwriting I almost recognized. I woke up still trying to remember what the meeting was even about.
