I dreamed I was late for my shift at the warehouse, same fluorescent aisles, but the fluorescent lights were ads that kept whispering my name like a notification I couldn’t swipe away. My phone was already in my hand and also still on the kitchen counter at home, so I kept checking both. The bus stop was the break room at work. Old classmate from high school was the driver, visor down, talking like my manager. I ran for the back door and my legs barely moved. Everyone had those cheap neck ports, including me, and mine kept clicking like a loose charger. I was wearing my pajama shirt under the safety vest and felt embarrassed. The hallway to shipping stretched too long and mixed with the mall near my apartment. I was looking for the locker with my badge and kept opening ones that belonged to neighbors. Mild dread that if I clocked in late the ads would know. Woke up reaching for my phone.
