I was at a crowded outdoor farmers market that somehow felt like the street right outside my old college apartment. I was trying to buy peaches, but my card kept getting declined, and I felt so flustered and embarrassed. Suddenly Mark from my current office was standing next to me in line. He just tapped his card and smiled, saying he would cover it. We ended up walking away from the stalls together toward a quiet side street. It started raining lightly, but neither of us cared. He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, then held my hand, slipping his fingers between mine. It felt so intensely warm and real, like this unspoken thing we've had at work finally snapped into place. We were about to step under an awning to kiss, but then my alarm went off. I woke up with this heavy, aching sense of longing, and now I have to see him in our ten o'clock budget meeting.
