Racing Through the Hallway to a Locker‑Kitchen Surprise
I woke up late for work and was sprinting down the hallway of my old high school, the one that’s now a community center. The lockers were still there, but the paint was a different shade. I could hear the bell ring, but it sounded like a train whistle. I fumbled for my locker combination, only to find a set of old keys that weren’t mine – they felt heavy, like the ones my dad used to keep in his pocket. When I finally opened the locker, instead of books there was a tiny, cramped apartment kitchen, complete with a coffee maker that hissed like a steam engine. My former teacher, Mrs. Alvarez, was standing there in a modern blazer, but her face flickered between hers and my college roommate’s. She asked me where my presentation was, and I realized I was still holding a stack of handwritten notes from a class I took a decade ago. I tried to explain, but my voice came out as a whisper that echoed through the hallway, and I woke up just as the bell – or train – was about to pass.
