I was on this urgent mission to return a set of old library books for my sister before five o'clock, or else she was going to get kicked out of college. But the library was somehow inside the huge shopping mall near my childhood home, mixed with the basement of my current office. I had to navigate through endless back corridors, ducking under construction plastic and climbing through half-finished stockrooms. My high school friend Mark was with me, guiding me like he had a map, but he kept stopping to look at clearance racks. Every time we found an elevator, the buttons were completely blank or went to parking levels that were pitch black. It felt like this epic, stressful trek across town, but all on foot through carpeted hallways. We finally spotted the return desk across a food court that seemed miles wide, but my legs felt impossibly heavy, like running underwater. I woke up right as the digital clock on the wall was turning to 4:59.
