Racing with One Pedal to Catch the Commuter Ferry

I was back in my hometown trying to bike over to my high school best friend's house, but every street I turned down connected to somewhere totally different. One turn put me on the coastal highway from a family vacation ten years ago, and suddenly I was racing to catch a commuter ferry before the ramp lifted. My bicycle only had one working pedal, so I had to kick off the pavement with my sneakers to move forward. My friend was standing on the top deck waving at me, holding two huge duffel bags like we were setting off on some massive cross-country trip. I barely made the jump onto the deck as the boat pulled away from the dock, out of breath and with grease all over my calves, but feeling this huge wave of relief that we were finally actually leaving.
