Someone Wrote a Question Mark on the Fogged Windshield

I was leaving the office after hours, the hallway lights already half off. Rain was hitting the windows like it does on the bus, even though I was still inside. I couldn’t find my badge and the elevator wouldn’t come, so I took the stairs and they opened onto the parking garage under my old apartment, not work. A man in a dark coat was standing by my car. I thought it was my coworker Dan, then it was my neighbor from college, same face somehow. He asked if I still had the envelope. I didn’t remember an envelope. My phone had a missed call from a number with no digits, just static. I kept walking between the cars looking for my keys, which were in my hand the whole time. He followed at a distance, not running, just always there when I looked back. I felt that tight, guilty feeling like I’d forgotten something important at a meeting. When I finally got in the car the windshield was fogged from inside and someone had written a question mark in it. I woke up before I could wipe it off.
