I was back in the house I grew up in, but the hallway between the kitchen and the bathroom just kept going. It had turned into this quiet, stone corridor lined with heavy wooden cabinets. An old woman was sitting on a folding chair in the middle of it, reading a very thin book. She looked like my high school art teacher, but I somehow knew she was actually my grandmother when she was young. I told her I couldn't find my car keys, and she handed me a small, flat brass pendant engraved with interlocking triangles instead. She said, 'These unlock the back door, but only if you hold them against the floor.' I tried pressing the metal down against the carpet near the stairs, and I could feel this low, deep vibration humming through the floorboards, like the whole house was resting on top of an ancient well. I wasn't scared, just felt this weird, quiet awe and a heavy nostalgia, like I'd forgotten some secret law about my childhood home.
